Popcorn: the quintessential movie snack, the healthy (ish) party treat, and a surprisingly versatile food. But did you know there's more to popcorn than just bags in the microwave? Let’s look at a few ways we like to cook up our Roberts Family Farms popcorn!
Stovetop Savvy:
I have a distinct memory of my grandpa Roberts standing at the stove and shaking a large pot to make popcorn. It was his Sunday evening tradition that he passed down to our generation. I like to sprinkle some Flavacol on the kernels while they are popping, this gives it a movie theater popcorn flavor. Here’s how to do it - heat a pot with 2 tablespoons of oil (coconut for movie theater vibes, olive or avocado for a healthier choice) and add 2-3 kernels and watch for them to pop. Once they pop you know your oil is hot enough, you can now add about 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels. Keep the pot shaking to prevent burning, and listen for the pops to slow down – that's your cue to remove it from heat. You'll be rewarded with fluffy, perfectly seasoned popcorn.
Microwave Magic:
Microwaving popcorn is all about convenience. Popcorn on the cob can be popped in a brown paper bag, but did you know that you can pop kernels in the microwave also? Start with about 1/3 cup of Roberts Family Farms Popcorn kernels and put them into a brown lunch sack, fold it shut, and microwave until the popping slows to 2-3 seconds. For a bowl method, use a microwave-safe bowl with a lid and listen for those pops!
Air Popper Power:
Air poppers are the healthy heroes of popcorn world. They use hot air to pop the kernels, resulting in a guilt-free, oil-free snack. Plus, they're mess-free and easy to clean. This is my go-to method when I just want some popcorn fast. When I make popcorn in the air popper I like to season it with my special blend of butter and seasonings. First, I melt about a tablespoon of butter, then I add a tablespoon of Orville Redenbacher’s Popcorn Oil and mix it together. I then sprinkle on some Flavacol and some Cheesy Jalapeno popcorn seasoning to make the perfect blend of buttery goodness!
More Flavoring Ideas:
If you like a little heat, try adding Cholula or Sriracha to your melted butter to add a little kick. We also like to sprinkle Tajin on popcorn to add a chile lime flavoring.
Do you like your popcorn treats sweet? Try sprinkling cinnamon and sugar on your popped popcorn (some say powdered sugar and cinnamon works better but we haven’t tried it yet). Kernel Season’s Popcorn Seasonings has a Caramel Corn and a Kettle Corn flavoring, they both work great to add a bit of sweetness to your popcorn.
